Woodstock’s Mike + Ruthy, among the young artists on the new Old Hills, Young Mountain recording we mentioned earlier this week, aren’t a new band like the others. The husband-wife duo have been touring and recording together for thirteen years, raising their kids along the way. In 2009, Mike + Ruthy released Waltz of the Chickadee (AmazonMP3 & Spotify), a personal favorite, which was followed by the fan-funded Million to One (AmazonMP3 & Spotify) the next year. Million rose to the top 20 on the Americana charts in 2010. On April 17th the band will release a new EP titled The NYC EP, a collection of six compelling new songs which includes their newly re-crafted Woody Guthrie ballad “My New York City.”
On Wednesday, Mike + Ruthy will join Sara & Sean Watkins at their monthly residency at LA’s Largo (Dawes will also be there). And in a few weeks, the duo will hold their CD release party with Aoife O’Donovan at NYC’s Joe’s Pub, along with Aoife O’Donovan of Crooked Still.
Check out this first video of the band on Mermaid Ave in Brooklyn, the street where Woody Guthrie lived. The second, “Oh Mama,” is a great track off of the new EP.
