THURSDAY: Elephant Revival at The Bowery Ballroom

It’s hard to fully experience Colorado bluegrass at a club in New York without some epic mountain ridge-lines in the background. That’s probably not why many of these bands fail make it out to the East Coast more often, but their visits are few and far between.

But on Thursday night, Nederland, CO’s Elephant Revival hits Manhattan’s Bowery Ballroom – just one stop on a tour that includes stops with Parsonfield, Nora Jane Struthers and Mike + Ruthy. Over the summer, Elephant Revival released Sands of Now (Amazon Digital, Amazon CD/DVD (with more songs) & Spotify) – a 23-track live album and DVD recorded over two nights at the Boulder Theater in front of two lively sold-out crowds. With tunes from each of their previous albums, Sands of Now captures the band’s haunting mountain sound that I’ve long loved from their studio albums, but now with great solos and the super fun vibe we experienced this past July in Newport.

The album (and hopefully the show) includes two of my favorite songs: “Birds and Stars” off of their 2013 release These Changing Skies, as well as “Sing to the Mountain” – a big fan favorite off the band’s self titled 2010 debut.

Tickets for tomorrow night’s Bowery show are still available. The band also plays tonight at Higher Ground in Burlington with Mike + Ruthy. (Burlington Sidenote: Charlie Rose is in both bands and awesome.)
