Belgium isn’t a hotbed for bluegrass, but it is the setting for The Broken Circle Breakdown – an Oscar-nominated Tribeca Film Festival foreign drama about a sad romance within a Belgian bluegrass band. With pretty stellar traditional bluegrass scores throughout the movie, the often tragic tone of the genre is a fitting soundtrack for this tale.
If you’re looking for something to really tear your heart out on a cold winter’s day, you’ll be happy to know that this is now streaming on Prime Instant Video for free. Despite the subtitles and a few awkward scenes, the film draws a picture of two very interesting characters set against themes of national healthcare policy, religion and the test of a family bond in times of trouble, with subtle comparisons to Appalachian miner culture.
