Back in February, I included the self-titled debut of Whitehorse, the Canadian husband-wife-duo made up of veteran musicians Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet, in my First Sunday Six. The band has since toured the U.S. and continued to extend their American fan base. In January, Whitehorse will formally release The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss, their second album, in the U.S. However, the album was released in Canada in August and is already available on both Amazon MP3 and Spotify.

The album shows off the duo’s breadth, with a ton of variety across its twelve tracks of fine songwriting and divinely arranged harmonies. Not only is there a salad bar of overall sound from song to song, McClelland and Doucet also switch off between instruments, including guitar, bass, keys, kick drum, stomp box, piano and more.

“Mismatched Eyes,” a simple little folk song, is my favorite track from the album. Also check out the album’s closing song, “Mexican Texaco,” for a great story.
