Last week, San Diego singer-songwriter Alex Woodard released a his book For The Sender, a story about four letters that Woodard received from four different women – letters that collectively shifted his view of the world and himself. The letters inspired twelve songs that Woodard co-wrote and recorded with fellow San Diego musicians in his dinner club, including Sean & Sara Watkins, Shawn Mullins and Switchfoot’s Jon Foreman (see full roster here). The songs were released along with the book.
While short in length, the book is rich in healthy soul searching questions for the reader as Woodard searches for his place in this world. There’s also plenty for the music fan, as Woodard outlines how he worked with the other musicians to write each of the songs. It’s a great picture of the songwriting process and this tightly-knit artist community. The book’s title song, which features Sean Watkins, is my favorite of the twelve. See the trailer for the book below.
