I’ve been a fan of Ollabelle for a long time and I miss them. I remember seeing them sing “Gone Today” before a packed crowd at tiny Banjo Jim’s back in April 2007 (see video of that performance below) and thinking it was one of the most soulful performances I had seen in years. It was the actually the day of the Virginia Tech massacre, so everyone there was a little shaken up at the time. But a performance on a day like that wasn’t out of place for Ollabelle. The band actually got their start right there at Banjo Jim’s (then called 9-C as it’s at E 9th st & Ave C) singing gospel songs in the aftermath of September 11th. It was a side project that landed them a debut album with Columbia/Sony Music produced by T Bone Burnett. That first self-titled album was followed in 2008 by Riverside Battle Songs, an amazing collection of Americana tunes. Since then, the band has played a few shows here and there but not much else.
However, there’s a new project in the works. The band recorded is currently recording new album and raising money for the album’s promotion of a new album on Kickstarter (see short video here). They’ve also booked a show at City Winery for June 10th.
