Northern Lights, the Boston-area bluegrass band, disbanded in March after 35 years of playing around town with a final show at a longtime bluegrass night held in church in Mansfield called the Rose Garden Coffeehouse. Eric Robertson and Mike Barnett were born long after the band began, but were NL band members for the last few years of its existence and took part in a jam session after the show. The jam included Barnett and Robertson’s fellow Boston music school student and Austin fiddler, Sarah Jarosz, currently studying at the New England Conservatory of Music
Steve Ide of the Folk, Bluegrass & Traditional Music blog captured an amazing cover of Gillian Welch’s “Look at Miss Ohio,” with Jarosz on vocals. Check it out…
P.S. Don’t worry, you can still see Robertson play with The Boston Boys, a progressive bluegrass group of Berklee students & alums. Barnett plays with The BBs and The Deadly Gentleman, which includes Greg Liszt of Crooked Still and David Grisman’s son Sam Grisman.
