Paste’s Best Covers of The Year

December 14, 2010

Before we all start fighting about the best albums of 2010, I thought I would throw out this list from Paste of this year’s best covers. Maybe I just had low expectations, but this list is pretty damn good (though it lost two notches with the inclusion of Amy Winehouse).

Old Crow Medicine’s cover of John Prine’s “Angel from Montgomery” stands out to me, but mostly because I just love this song (Ben Harper’s cover of this same song a few years back is amazing AND his cover on this list is not half bad either).

Other faves are the Andrew Bird cover of “Twistable Turnable Man” by Shel Silverstein and The Tallest Man on Earth’s rendition of Paul Simon’s “Graceland.”

Biggest surprises were the tracks by St. Vincent, Beck and Liars (“Never Tear Us Apart” – INXS) and Amanda Palmer (“Fake Plastic Trees” – Radiohead). However, with voices like those, it’s hard to slaughter a classic.
